Description

A simple, highly addictive holiday treat known as Christmas Crack or Saltine Toffee, made with a base of saltine crackers covered in a baked brown sugar and butter toffee, topped with melted chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, or dark)
  • Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet (10×15 inches or similar) with parchment paper or foil, extending up the sides. Spray with non-stick spray if using foil.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire bottom as much as possible.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then reduce heat to medium-low and boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, if using.
  5. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading with a spatula if needed.
  6. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly and slightly darker.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let sit for 5 minutes to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula.
  8. If desired, add sprinkles over the melted chocolate.
  9. Transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator or freezer and chill for at least 1-2 hours, or until completely firm.
  10. Once firm, break the “crack” into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for longer.

Notes

  • Using parchment paper is highly recommended for easy removal and cleanup.
  • Ensure the toffee mixture boils for the full 3 minutes for proper hardening.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
