Description
A festive and fun Grinch Cake made with green-colored white cake layers and a creamy homemade cream cheese frosting, topped with a red candy heart.
Ingredients
- 1 box (15.25 ounces) white cake mix (plus ingredients to make the cake, e.g., eggs, oil, water)
- Green gel food coloring
- 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 4-5 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream
- 1 large red candy heart for decoration
Instructions
- Prepare the white cake mix according to package directions, but add green gel food coloring to the batter until a vibrant Grinch green color is achieved. Pour batter into two greased and floured 8-inch or 9-inch round cake pans.
- Bake according to package directions. Let cakes cool in pans for 10-15 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- While cakes cool, prepare the cream cheese frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract and milk (or cream), beating until the frosting is light and fluffy. Adjust consistency with more powdered sugar or milk if needed.
- Once cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a generous layer of cream cheese frosting over the first cake layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake smoothly or with decorative swirls.
- Carefully place the red candy heart near the top/center of the cake to represent the Grinch’s heart.
Notes
- Ensure the cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent the cream cheese frosting from melting.
- Adjust the amount of green food coloring to achieve your desired shade of Grinch green.
- The red candy heart serves as the symbolic heart of the Grinch.
