Description

A delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, these one-pan sloppy joes combine ground beef with sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms in a cheesy sauce, served on toasted brioche buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 8 ounces brown mushrooms, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 8 ounces sliced Provolone cheese, chopped
  • 6 brioche hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Allow it to develop a nice crust before breaking it apart. Continue cooking until evenly browned. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.
  2. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced mushrooms. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender and lightly caramelized.
  3. Return the browned ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and beef broth until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to your desired sloppy joe consistency.
  5. Remove the skillet from the heat. Gradually stir in the chopped Provolone cheese until it’s fully melted and incorporated into the meat mixture.
  6. Lightly toast your brioche hamburger buns. Spoon a generous amount of the cheesy Philly cheesesteak mixture onto each toasted bun. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • This recipe is made in one pan for easy cleanup.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce fat content.
  • Adjust cheese quantity for cheesier results.
