  • Ketchup & Yellow Mustard: My secret weapon! These two create a tangy, rich background flavor.
  • Butter & All-Purpose Flour: These are the magic behind our creamy, dreamy cheese sauce. They make a perfect roux.
  • Milk: It thins our sauce to just the right consistency for a luxurious feel.
  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese: Oh, the cheesy goodness! It melts beautifully, making every bite gooey and comforting.
  • Dill Pickle Slices: Trust me on this one. They add a bright, tangy contrast to the richness.

Substitutions and Tips for Your Tater Tot Casserole

I always encourage you to make recipes your own! Here are some ideas for tweaking this wonderful Tater Tot Casserole.

  • Onion Swap: Half a fresh minced onion works beautifully. Just sauté it with your ground beef!

How to Make Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole

Making this comfort food Tater Tot Casserole is a breeze. I promise it is!

Just follow these simple steps for a truly delicious, crowd-pleasing dinner.

Preparing Your Ingredients

First things first, get ready. Preheat your oven to a cozy 350 degrees F. Grab your favorite casserole dish. Give it a light spray with cooking spray. This stops anything from sticking. It makes cleanup so much easier too!

Cooking the Ground Beef Mixture

Next, let’s brown the beef. Use a large skillet on medium-high heat. Add your ground beef and the dried onion seasoning. Cook until it’s all browned and crumbly. Don’t forget to drain any extra grease. This keeps our casserole from being too oily. Now, stir in the ketchup and mustard. Add salt and pepper to your taste. Mix this well. It’s important to make sure the flavors blend. Spread this tasty beef mixture evenly. It should form the first layer in your prepared casserole dish. Then, place a single layer of pickle chips right on top of the beef. This adds a lovely tangy surprise!

Crafting the Creamy Cheese Sauce

Now, for the magic sauce! Use that same skillet. Melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour. Keep stirring until it’s golden brown. This usually takes about 5 minutes. Next, slowly add the milk. Whisk it constantly. This makes sure it’s smooth. Cook until it thickens. Then, stir in 1.5 cups of the shredded cheese. Keep stirring ’til it melts. The sauce should be thick enough to leave a line. If you run a spoon down the middle, it should stay open for 5 seconds. This perfect cheese sauce is key!

Assembling Your Tater Tot Casserole

Time to build the casserole. Pour that amazing cheese sauce over the beef and pickle layers. Spread it out evenly. It’s looking good already! Finally, arrange the frozen tater tots on top. Make sure they are in a single layer. Place them close together. I usually use about 50 tots. They’ll get perfectly crispy!

Baking to Golden Perfection

Pop your casserole into the preheated oven. Bake it for 35 minutes. Removed it from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining half-cup of cheese on top. Put it back in the oven for 5 more minutes. This last bit of cheese gets perfectly melty. If you want, garnish with some fresh chopped parsley. This Tater Tot Casserole is now ready!

How to Store Tater Tot Casserole

You can definitely save leftover tater tot casserole. Let it cool completely first. Then, cover it tightly with foil or plastic wrap. You can also transfer it to an airtight container. It will keep well in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. This makes it perfect for delicious meal prep or lunches!

Tips for Success

  • Don’t skip draining the beef; it avoids a greasy casserole.
  • Don’t overcook your roux when making the cheese sauce.
  • Layer those tater tots in a single, close-packed layer for best crispness.
  • Properly season each layer. Salt and pepper are your friends here.
  • Let the casserole rest a few minutes after baking.
  • Use sharp cheddar for a more robust cheesy flavor.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

  • Large Skillet: You’ll need one for browning beef and making sauce. A Dutch oven works too.
  • Casserole Dish: A 9×13 inch dish is perfect for this Tater Tot Casserole. Any similar oven-safe dish will do.
  • Whisk: Essential for a smooth, lump-free cheese sauce. A fork can work in a pinch.
  • Spatula or Spoon: For stirring and spreading ingredients.
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons: Accuracy is key in cooking.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve this cozy Tater Tot Casserole with a crisp green salad.
  • A side of steamed green beans or roasted broccoli adds nice color.
