Description
A delicious apple crisp recipe that skips the oats for a perfectly crisp topping.
Ingredients
- 6-8 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to apple sweetness)
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- For the Topping:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- For the topping, in a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and bubbly. If the topping browns too quickly, you can lightly tent it with foil.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Delicious warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Adjust the granulated sugar in the apple filling based on the sweetness of your apples.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat.
- If the topping starts to brown too quickly during baking, you can loosely tent the dish with aluminum foil.
